Your Questions About Clinical Massage Answered

  • What makes your massage therapy different from a spa massage?

My work is therapeutic and results-oriented rather than focused primarily on relaxation. Sessions are structured around identifying patterns of tension, restriction, and postural imbalance that contribute to discomfort. I use hands-on assessment and clinical reasoning developed since 1996, along with training from the Brian Utting School of Massage and a CNA background. While relaxation can certainly occur, the primary goal is measurable improvement in mobility, alignment, and pain reduction. Each appointment is one-on-one and customized to your needs, with focused techniques selected to address underlying dysfunction rather than just provide temporary soothing.

  • How does Counterstrain therapy work on the body?

Counterstrain is a gentle, position-based technique that works with the fascia and nervous system rather than relying on strong pressure. By identifying tender points and placing the body in comfortable positions, protective reflexes can relax and reset. This approach helps reduce chronic guarding patterns that contribute to persistent discomfort. Clients often describe the experience as subtle yet effective. Counterstrain is especially useful for long-standing tension, postural strain, or pain that has not responded to traditional massage. The focus is on restoring balanced tension and improving movement quality over time.

  • Is pregnancy massage safe throughout pregnancy?

Pregnancy massage is adapted carefully to each trimester and individual presentation. My internship with Bainbridge Island Midwives provided additional experience in prenatal positioning and safety considerations. Sessions are performed using supportive bolsters and side-lying techniques to maintain alignment and comfort. Pressure is adjusted thoughtfully, and areas commonly affected by pregnancy, such as the lower back, hips, and shoulders, receive focused attention. Communication remains ongoing throughout the appointment to ensure you feel secure and supported. The goal is to reduce muscular strain and help you move more comfortably as your body changes.

  • What are your hours, and how do I book an appointment?

Appointments are available Monday through Friday from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The clinic is closed on weekends. All sessions are by appointment only to maintain a quiet, focused environment for each client. You can book directly online using the scheduling link or text 360-280-0413 for the fastest response. Texting is often preferred because I am typically in session during the day and unable to answer calls. Scheduling ahead is recommended to secure your preferred time.
